Cambodia travelogue: Battambang to Siem reap

boat on Sangker river This morning we woke up very early, at 5.45am, along with the sun, as we are to take the boat to Siem reap. We ask a tuk-tuk to drive us to the pier, north of the city.

Many boats are parked waiting for tourists... that's what we thought but actually only few tourists were on board. The majority are cambodian people which makes the journey even more authentic. There is a nice paved road from Battambang to Siem reap but we preferred to take the boat as the journey is more interesting in terms of landscapes. As the water level of Sangker river is low, the journey is expected to be 8 hours, insteas of 3 by the road but we are not in a hurry... But the Smokin'pot is primarily a bar-restaurant in which you can taste any kind of cambodian dishes and delicious fruits juices.

Both riverbanks are interesting as people are leaving there. Some are fishing, some are cultivating vegetables, others are bathing, there are a lot of activities. We also spot a lot of boats on the opposite direction. But as we sail, after 2 hours, there are less and less stilt houses on the banks, the river winds more and more and it becomes difficult to move along because of the low level of the water. Then appear the first floating villages, it is amazing to see that the life seems ordinary for these people. The major difference with a usual village being the houses are surrounded by water!

Hour after hour the landscape change until we reach Tonle sap lake and then Siem reap. There a tuk-tuk driver took us to our hotel.
