Photo of a dead zebra

How come the zebra ended up dead?

dead zebra kicked in the head

When you look at this photo of a dead zebra lying on its left side in the Etosha bush, you might wonder what has happened.
This male zebra was killed while kicked in the head by another zebra just as we were watching them fighting for a female zebra near a water hole in Etosha game reserve Namibia during a photo safari.
We clearly didn't expect this outcome when we parked the 4x4 to observe three zebras which seemed agitated. We quickly understood that we were dealing with a female and two males zebras, the latter competing for the former. They kept on chasing each other or showing strength.
Suddenly, while the two males zebra were running, the first one kicked in the head of the second one which instantly fell dead! What a shock!
We knew that whatever the animals males often fight to win to right to mate with a female but most of the time it ends with one mal admitting its defeat and leaving. This time, the defeated zebra ended dead...
After a while we realised that this was a great opportunity for us to see how animal carcasses are cleaned by jackals and vultures. We marked the place in our GPS and decided to come back a few hours later.
