Leopard seal: fierce mammal of Antarctica

Leopard seal resting on an iceberg in Antarctica. Moving with difficulty out of the water this imposing animal reveals to be gracious and agile while swimming which enables him to chase young seals and penguins.
This photo of a peaceful leopard seal gives a wrong image of this mammal.
Its name come from the stains covering its fur and also probably from its long canines teeth. Fierce predator the leopard seal patrols the water where penguins enter the ocean. When it catches its prey, often by the feet, it starts shaking the penguin vigorously and beating its body against the surface of the water repeatedly.
