Elephant seal in Antarctica
41/44

At the far end of Aishoa island in Antarctica we spotted a dozen of elephant seals resting on the beach. They were all imbricated, probably to avoid heat loss all the more than they were moulting. Indeed, on the photo we see the elephant seal is shedding its skin. Elephant seals live 80 percent of their life in the ocean. The main reason why they stay on the beach is during mating season. An elephant seal can dive to more then 1300 meters and hold its breath for about two hours!
They feed on octopuses, eels and even penguins.
