Photo of red hartebeest

Antelope in a dry landscape

Red hartebeest antelope

Red hartebeest are not so common whether in Botswana or Namibia. We actually were lucky to spot one in Moremi game reserve of Botswana.
Unlike impalas or springboks it is easy to tell a red hartebeest from another antelope, mainly because of its typical horns and long thin face. But that is not the only characteristic of the red hartebeest. Did you notice on the photo that its back has a descending slope: the shoulders are higher than the rump. This is not the only antelope with this distinction, but combined with the shape of the horns and the colour of course, red hartebeest are quite easy to identify in the bush.
