Superb decoration of a Venetian gondola, this horse (or seahorse, I admit not being able to make up my mind) also has a use since we can see that the reins extend into moorings for the boat. Many owners of gondolas adorn the prows of their boats, to make them stand out from the rest and of course for the aesthetic aspect I suppose.
