Photo of the Bridge of Sighs
One of the most famous Venetian bridges

This bridge was nicknamed Bridge of Sighs in the 9th century because it was assumed that the prisoners passing in front of the lagoon and admiring the place heaved a sigh of despair never to see this dream setting again. Given the romantic nature of Venice, I first believed that the Bridge of Sighs was nicknamed in reference to a place where rejected lovers came to cry their despair. But in fact no, it seems that the explanation given above is the correct one.
