Close up photo of drinking elephant
How do elephants drink?

As an everyday diet, the elephant eats up to 200kg of vegetation and drinks around 100 liters of water. This close shot picture of a drinking elephant shows how it uses its trunk for drinking.
The water is actually pumped by the trunk and released in the mouth after a little twist of the trump.
As a child that is something that I wondered: how do elephants drink?
I assumed they could not swallow water via the trump because it's their nose... there had to be another way! This pedagogical photo shows a close-up of the technique used by the elephant to drink.
In this wildlife photo gallery I selected three photos involving elephants and reflecting their specificities:
- A threatening elephant warning to keep our distances. The more you spot wildlife the more confident you become. Therefore you try to get closer and closer. This agitated elephant reminded us to keep away.
- A typical landscape photo of Namibia pan with an elephant in the foreground which sums up what you can expect to see in Etosha.
- And finally a pedagogical photo of an elephant using its trump to drink.
As for the other animals I took a huge number of photos of elephants during the photos safaris. But I had to make a drastic selection so as to narrow the number down to 51 wildlife photos of austral Africa. Mission accomplished!
